Four Faculty Recruitment Announcements



OPEN RANK RESEARCH FACULTY – STATE HEALTH POLICY:

The Center for State Health Policy (CSHP) within the Rutgers Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research (IFH) is recruiting a faculty member with demonstrated ability to develop and lead a program of research that addresses critical population health and/or health care policy issues of relevance to New Jersey, other states, and the nation. The successful applicant(s) will be appointed as a non-tenure track faculty member at a rank commensurate with their experience.

The incumbent in this position will be expected both to respond to requests from New Jersey state agencies and other sponsors to meet specific research and evaluation needs and independently initiate new competitive funding proposals for policy-relevant research.

CSHP has a strong research infrastructure and the successful candidate will lead and mentor teams of data analysts and research staff to accomplish project goals. The candidate will also be expected to successfully collaborate with other faculty from CSHP, IFH and other units at Rutgers to advance the Center’s mission. Over time, the incumbent will be expected to assume a greater leadership role within the Center and Institute.

CSHP and IFH host rich data resources that will immediately be available to the incumbent. For example, the Center receives continuously updated, comprehensive NJ Medicaid claims which it links to homeless services, cancer registry and other state administrative data sets. CSHP and IFH also are launching a NJ-based cohort study that will include biomarker, actigraphy and interview data for diverse panel state residents, and IFH is home to a Survey/Data Core that includes longitudinal national Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance claims and other data.

Mid-career and senior applicants will be expected to have successfully developed and executed research projects and funding proposals. Early stage applicants who have demonstrated high potential to develop a funded research program during a post-doctoral fellowship or similar experiences will be considered.

Additional Required Qualifications:
  • A doctorate in any relevant discipline is required as well as advanced quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods empirical skills and strong theoretical grounding. The role requires strong project leadership and management skills, as well experience in successfully engaging with policymakers or other stakeholder constituencies. Strong written and oral presentation skills, including ability to translate research findings to non-technical audiences, is essential. Experience developing successful extramural grant/contract proposals is strongly preferred.

  • About the position:
    Candidates are sought who bring expertise in one or more areas relevant to health systems, population health, and policy research. Examples of areas of inquiry of particular interest to this recruitment include:
  • Informing the development and evaluation of payment and delivery system reforms intended to lead to improved, more efficient care for medically and socially complex patients, particularly those covered by Medicaid;
  • Informing and evaluating strategies to improve population health and well-being by addressing social determinants of health;
  • Identifying institutional causes and potential solutions to long-standing and emerging racial/ethnic, gender, socioeconomic health and other health and health care disparities and inequities; and
  • Evaluating public policies intended to improve care for aging and disabled populations, including those needing mental health, substance use disorder, long-term services and supports, or end-of-life care.

ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF HEALTH SERVICES RESEARCH:

The Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research, a unit of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS), invites applications for a Health Services Researcher with health care delivery and/or policy research experience or training.

Many opportunities exist for collaboration with significant existing lines of research on behavioral health including psychotropic oversight for foster care children, quality of care for persons with severe mental illness, psychotropic treatment in nursing homes, integrated behavioral health care, health system response to the opioid epidemic and other substance abuse and mental health topics.

Other areas of interest include comparative effectiveness research, access to care, quality of care, health disparities, integrated care for behavioral health and primary medical care, financing and organization of health care, chronic disease management and outcomes, health care reform, aging research, mixed methods and evaluation of health policy and delivery system initiatives through analyses of Medicare and Medicaid programs. Research addressing population health, translation of health services research findings into practice and the needs of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups is valued.

The successful candidate will be jointly appointed in the Institute for Health with tenure-track or tenured appointment in an appropriate Rutgers school or department with teaching, clinical, and/or mentoring responsibilities. Opportunity exists for appointment as a Chancellor’s Scholar.

Additional Required Qualifications:
  • Strong interest in building a health services or policy research portfolio working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary group of social scientists, policy scholars and clinicians.
  • Doctoral or clinical degree (e.g., PhD, MD, DrPH) with strong theoretical grounding.
  • Empirical skills, quantitative and/or qualitative research expertise.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to support developing a rigorous program of research.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strong, well-designed applications for federal research funding.
  • Developing and leading a program of research in substance abuse and mental health services would be especially of interest.
  • Expertise with health services research data resources, such as Medicaid, Medicare and private insurance datasets, is welcomed. Substantial multiyear data resources with opportunities for research with electronic health record data from an extensive Rutgers health system and affiliated health systems are available.
Salary:

Salary and academic rank will be commensurate with scholarly achievements. Given the importance of the candidate’s ability to develop and lead a substantial program of externally funded research, preference would be for junior faculty with grant funding experience and mid-career to senior researchers with established grant funding records. Initial support for establishing a strong program of research will be provided with the expectation that the research program will be increasingly supported by extramural funds.

ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF GERONTOLOGY OR GERIATRIC/PALLIATIVE MEDICINE:

The Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research, a unit of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS), invites applications for a faculty position in gerontology or geriatric/palliative medicine with health care, services delivery and/or policy research experience or training.

The successful candidate will be jointly appointed in the Institute for Health with tenure-track or tenured appointment within an appropriate Rutgers school or department with teaching, clinical, and/or mentoring responsibilities. Opportunity exists for appointment as a Chancellor’s Scholar as well as protective efforts and support during the early years of hire.

Additional Required Qualifications:
  • A doctoral degree in gerontology, doctor of geriatric/palliative medicine or an advanced social science degree in psychology, sociology, nursing or social work combined with research, background or training in gerontology or aging studies.
  • A strong interest in building a services or policy research portfolio working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary group of social scientists, clinicians and policy scholars.
  • Demonstrated track record of successfully competing for research grants or high potential for federal funding.
  • Interest in developing a program of research in any of a number of potential areas in gerontology or geriatric/palliative medicine including, but not limited to, behavioral health, minority health, health equity, trauma exposure, violence, biopsychosocial behaviors in prevention and treatment, chronic disease management and health outcomes, and evaluation of health policy and delivery system initiatives.
  • Highly desirable is research addressing population health, translational scientific research, and the needs of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups.
  • A strong theoretical grounding and quantitative and/or qualitative research skills with excellent oral and written communication skills to support developing a rigorous program of research.
