Tobias Gerhard (PhD, Pharmacoepidemiology, University of Florida, 2007; BSc, Pharmacy, Albert-Ludwigs University, Germany, 2002) is a Director for PETS and Associate Professor at the Institute and at the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy. He serves as Associate Director of the Institute’s Center for Health Services Research on Pharmacotherapy, Chronic Disease Management, and Outcomes, where he conducts research on use, safety, and outcomes of prescription drugs, particularly those used to treat mental health conditions.
He is interested in epidemiological methods and their applications in the analysis of large administrative databases. Dr. Gerhard’s research focuses on comparative safety and effectiveness of antipsychotic medications, pharmacological treatments of dementia, pharmacoepidemiological methods, and more generally research on use and management of psychotropic medications in Medicaid, Medicare, and privately insured populations.
Dr. Gerhard serves as Co-PI of the AHRQ-funded Center for Education and Research on Mental Health Therapeutics (Rutgers CERTs), subcontract PI of a PCORI-funded study on adaptive pharmacotherapy strategies for schizophrenia, and PI of an NIMH R21 that examines the safety of second generation antipsychotics for adult depression. He is the recipient of a NARSAD Young Investigator Award and a NCDEU New Investigator Award. Dr. Gerhard is a Fellow and Board Member of the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology (ISPE) and currently serves on FDA’s Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee (DSaRM).
